Monarch to Deliver Intimate Statement on Cancer in Television Programme
King Charles has filmed a first-hand account regarding his battle with cancer, scheduled for transmission as part of this year's fundraising campaign, run by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.
Buckingham Palace confirmed the King would talk about his "path to recovery" as a individual battling cancer, in a video message on Friday evening at 8pm UK time.
The recording, recorded at his London residence two weeks ago, will stress the importance of routine screenings to help guarantee more people detect the disease at an early stage.
This constitutes a rare update on the medical condition of the Monarch, who has been in a course of therapy since his condition was announced in early last year. However, it is believed improbable the King will disclose his type of cancer.
Awareness Primary Goal
The awareness initiative each year collects money for medical research and treatment and prompts people to get check-ups to increase the probability of an timely detection.
The King's public discussion about his illness, and living with cancer, has been intended to promote education and to persuade more people to get checked - and this will be advanced with this exceptional direct participation.
To date the King's key philosophy to his cancer has been to keep working, maintaining a full diary alongside his ongoing course of therapy, and he appears not to have wanted to be characterised by his illness.
The past twelve months has seen the Sovereign, taking several international tours, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and hosting the biggest number of foreign dignitaries to the UK for almost 40 years, featuring the German president last week.
The Televised Evening Programme
The upcoming Stand Up to Cancer programme on Channel 4, presented by presenters including Davina McCall, Adam Hills and Clare Balding, will appeal to people not to be afraid of getting cancer checks.
All three have been personally touched by cancer - one host disclosed last month she had undergone surgery for the disease, while another presenter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer over a decade ago. Presenter Adam Hills has previously spoken about his late father, who had one form of cancer and then later another illness.
The programme will target the approximate millions of people in the UK who Cancer Research UK says are not current with national health programmes, with an website to let people check if they are eligible for screenings for key health indicators.
In an attempt to explain cancer checks and illustrate the importance of timely identification there will be a real-time transmission from treatment centres at two Cambridge hospitals in Cambridge.
"My aim is to take the fear from preventative tests and demonstrate the public that they are not on their own in this," said Davina McCall.
Understanding National Services
At present in the UK, there are three national health screening services - for specific cancers - available to certain age groups.
A new scheme for lung health is also being phased in for people at potential risk of contracting the disease, primarily aimed at people aged 55-74 years old, who are smokers or used to.
Male patients may request prostate screenings, but there is lacking a standardised service in place.
Funding Research
The Stand Up to Cancer project, which has raised over one hundred million pounds for many years, is supporting multiple medical projects encompassing thousands of patients.
King Charles, in a statement for dignitaries at a event for related organisations in the spring, had referred to understanding the "daunting and at times frightening reality" for patients and their loved ones.
But he stated his experience of living with cancer had shown him that "periods of great challenge of illness can be alleviated by the support of carers," as he thanked those who cared for those receiving treatment.
The Palace has not revealed what kind of cancer the King has, or the medical care he has been given. The King's cancer was detected following he had received a medical treatment.
