New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
