Taking Pleasure In the Implosion of the Conservative Party? That's Understandable – But Completely Wrong

There have been times when Tory figureheads have sounded reasonably coherent on the surface – and alternate phases where they have come across as animal crackers, yet remained popular by party loyalists. We are not in that situation. One prominent Conservative left the crowd unmoved when she presented to her conference, even as she presented the red meat of migrant-baiting she thought they wanted.

This wasn't primarily that they’d all awakened with a renewed sense of humanity; instead they lacked faith she’d ever be equipped to deliver it. Effectively, fake vegan meat. Conservatives despise that. An influential party member reportedly described it as a “themed procession”: boisterous, animated, but nonetheless a parting.

Future Prospects for this Party Having Strong Arguments to Make for Itself as the Most Accomplished Democratic Party in the World?

A faction is giving another squiz at one contender, who was a hard “no” at the beginning – but now it’s the end, and rivals has departed. Some are fostering a excitement around Katie Lam, a young parliamentarian of the latest cohort, who presents as a traditional Conservative while filling her social media with border-control messaging.

Is she poised as the standard-bearer to challenge opposition forces, now outpolling the Conservatives by a substantial lead? Can we describe for overcoming competitors by mirroring their stance? And, should one not exist, maybe we can borrow one from combat sports?

Should You Take Pleasure In Such Events, in a Schadenfreude Way, in a Just-Deserts Way, One Can See Why – Yet Totally Misguided

It isn't necessary to examine America to know this, or reference Daniel Ziblatt’s influential work, the historical examination: all your cognitive processes is emphasizing it. The mainstream right is the essential firewall resisting the extremist factions.

His research conclusion is that democracies survive by satisfying the “propertied and powerful” happy. I’m not wild about it as an guiding tenet. One gets the impression as though we’ve been keeping the privileged groups for ages, at the detriment of other citizens, and they never seem quite happy enough to cease desiring to reduce support out of disability benefits.

But his analysis goes beyond conjecture, it’s an archival deep dive into the Weimar-era political organization during the interwar Germany (along with the UK Tories in that historical context). As moderate conservatism becomes uncertain, if it commences to pursue the buzzwords and superficial stances of the extremist elements, it cedes the direction.

We Saw Comparable Behavior In the Referendum Aftermath

The former Prime Minister aligning with Steve Bannon was one particularly egregious example – but radical alignment has become so pronounced now as to eliminate competing Conservative messages. What happened to the old-school Conservatives, who prize continuity, conservation, legal frameworks, the national prestige on the world stage?

What happened to the progressives, who described the country in terms of economic engines, not volatile situations? Don’t get me wrong, I didn't particularly support either faction either, but the contrast is dramatic how these ideologies – the broad-church approach, the Cameroonian Conservative – have been eliminated, superseded by relentless demonisation: of newcomers, Islamic communities, social support users and activists.

They Walk On Stage to Themes Resembling the Theme Tune to the Popular Series

And talk about what they cannot stand for any more. They describe rallies by 75-year-old pacifists as “carnivals of hatred” and display banners – national emblems, Saint George’s flags, all objects bearing a bold patriotic hues – as an open challenge to those questioning that complete national identity is the ultimate achievement a human can aspire to.

We observe an absence of any natural braking system, encouraging reassessment with their own values, their historical context, their own plan. Whatever provocation the Reform leader presents to them, they follow. Consequently, absolutely not, there's no pleasure to see their disintegration. They are pulling democratic norms into the abyss.
