The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.

Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the hit series reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“We have some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a better idea. This approach has served us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?

“I want Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
